Plan Ahead Before Getting a License or ID
Since July 3, as part of its Secure ID initiative to comply with the Federal Real ID Act of 2005, the Department of Driver Services has required first time and renewing license holders to provide original documentation to prove identity, social security number and two proofs of residency. Those license holders who have had legal name changes (for marriages, divorces or adoptions, for instance) must also provide documentation of those changes.
Throughout the course of last month, average customer wait times statewide dropped week after week, and at the same time the overall volume of licenses produced increased.
To help DDS make wait times even more manageable, remember these two simple tips:
- Create a Custom Document Checklist to assure that you bring what you need when you visit.
- Keep in mind that Tuesday is the busiest day for customer service centers, so it's best to plan your visit for another time.
