Georgians grieve with and pray for the families and friends of those affected by Friday's senseless tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In honor and as a mark of respect to those affected by the events in Newtown, Conn., flags on all state buildings and grounds have been flown at half-staff and will be until sunset tomorrow.
Schools in Georgia already work with the state and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency to implement safety guidelines. Since Friday, schools across the state have taken various approaches to assess and step up their safety and security plans.
If you have concerns about your child’s school, the Georgia Department of Education encourages you to talk with local school administrators and read this school safety resources page. Recommendations on how to talk to children about tragedies and a school safety checklist are just a few of the resources available. This tip sheet for talking with and helping youth and children may also be helpful.
