Applying for Food Assistance with WIC
June 24, 2013
In 2011, 14.9% of American households didn't have enough food to maintain a healthy lifestyle, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To help combat this problem, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children helps low-income families with infants and toddlers eat well and stay healthy.
Before you apply for assistance, see whether your family meets the eligibility requirements. If so, call 1-800-228-9173 to set up an appointment.
At the appointment, you'll need to present proofs of identity, residency and total household income. You'll also need to bring medical records for yourself and your children.
To see the groceries you can buy with WIC vouchers, review the food package. WIC will cover these food costs for a short period, generally 6 months to 1 year. If your family still needs help after that period, you can apply again for assistance.
