Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta on January 15, 1929. Dr. King was a major component of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. A federal holiday was established in 1986 for every third Monday in January to be set aside in recognition of Dr. King. Therefore, all state offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2014.

To learn more about Dr. King and his life, feel free to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Downtown Atlanta. This exhibit was created by the U. S. Department of the Interior to preserve the life and legacy of Dr. King.
