Back To School Tax Free Holiday
It’s back-to-school time! That means Georgia’s sales tax holiday is almost here. This Friday, August 1 and Saturday, August 2, Georgia residents can take advantage of tax-free items during their school shopping. The Georgia Department of Revenue broke down these tax-free items into three categories:
Clothing and Footwear
Most clothes with a sales price of $100.00 or less (per item) will be sales tax exempt. However, keep in mind this doesn't include jewelry, handbags, umbrellas or watches.
Example of items that will have no sales tax include:
- Baby clothes (but not baby bibs)
- Ear muffs
- Lab coats
This category includes computers, computer components and prewritten computer software. You can buy these for noncommercial home or personal use, but the sales price must be $1,000.00 or less per item.
Some examples that fall under this category are:
- Batteries (for computers)
- Car adaptors
- Data storage devices
- Docking stations
- Keyboards (for computers)
- Web cameras
In this last category, you can buy certain school and art supplies without sales tax if they are bought for noncommercial use and cost $20.00 or less per item.
Some examples of tax free school supplies include:
- Book bags
- Index cards
- Lunch boxes
Not Sales Tax Exempt
Items that are NOT tax free include:
- Cell phones
- Digital Cameras
- Cases for electronic devices
- Regular batteries
