Bryan County was created in 1793 from parts of Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties. It is named for Jonathan Bryan, a member of the King's Council who accompanied James Oglethorpe at the colony's founding and served as one of the first British subjects to protest the oppressive rule of England. He was imprisoned for his offenses to the crown.
