Camden County, the second county to be created, combined the Colonial parishes of St. Mary and St. Thomas. Its name is a tribute to Charles Pratt, Earl of Camden and a champion of home rule for the colonies. Remains of a Spanish mission, thought to have been erected 200 years before James Oglethorpe's arrival, lie on the county's St. Mary's River. Jeffersonton served as the first county seat, then the town of St. Marys, and finally Woodbine.
