Chamblee incorporated on August 17, 1908. It is one of eight cities located within DeKalb County.
The origin of the city's name is somewhat a mystery. One story has it that in 1885 local residents petitioned the U.S. Postal Service to establish a post office at Roswell Junction. At the time, the U.S. Postal Service worried that the proposed name for the office "Roswell Junction" would confuse carriers who also delivered mail to the neighboring city, Roswell. Supposedly, the Postal Service then randomly selected the post office name "Chamblee" from the list of petitioners.
