Chattooga County, created in 1838 from parts of Walker and Floyd counties, is named for its principal river. Summerville is the county seat, but the origin of its name is uncertain. Within Chattooga County territory lies the home of the famous Cherokee Sequoyah who invented his nation's alphabet, thus advancing his people through use of a writ­ten language.
