Clarkesville, the Habersham County seat, incorporated as a village on November 26, 1823. The city remembers General John C. Clark, the son of the revolutionary hero and governor of Georgia, Elijah Clarke.

Among Clarkesville's attractions is Moccasin Creek Park, a state park nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains that offers visitors chances to camp, boat, fish and hike. Other notable landmarks include Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church and the De Soto monument across from the Courthouse. This monument describes how De Soto passed through Habersham County on his travels.
