Incorporated in 1854, Covington, the Newton County seat, honors Leonard Covington, a general famed for his leadership during skirmishes with the Native American Indians and throughout the War of 1812.
Nicknamed the "City of Beautiful Homes", Covington offers tours of the historic homes in the area. This tour includes homes dating back to the pre-Civil War era.
Covington is also well-known as a frequent filming location. Not only did both the television shows In the Heat of the Night and The Dukes of Hazard film in the town, so too did the 1992 Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei comedy My Cousin Vinny.
