Coweta County is named for a Lower Creek Indian tribe, the Cowetas. A treaty in 1825 ceded land for this county and, subsequently, for Heard and Campbell counties. (Much later, during the Great Depression, Fulton County absorbed Campbell.) Newnan, Coweta's county seat, bears the name of another Indian fighter, General Daniel Newnan.
