Crawford County, created in 1822 from part of Houston County and later enlarged by additions from Macon and Talbot counties, honors William H. Crawford, the Georgian who served as U.S. secretary of the treasury that same year. Crawford also worked as a jurist and a diplomat. Knoxville commemorates General Henry Knox of the Revolutionary War.
