Dade County, the northwest corner piece of Georgia, dates to 1837 when the legislature divided Walker County. First called Salem, the county seat was later designated Trenton after New Jersey's capital. Until the 1940s, Dade remained isolated by mountain ridges and supported no paved roads to allow easy access to other parts of the state. Travelers usually approached Dade from Tennessee.
