Douglas County, pieced together from Carroll and old Campbell counties as well as a small section of what was originally Cherokee County, dates to 1870. Both the county and its seat of government, Douglasville, recognize Stephen A. Douglas, Abraham Lincoln's famed rival. During the pivotal 1860 election, Douglas ran the Democratic ticket with vice-presidential nominee and former Georgia Governor Herschel Vespasian Johnson.
