Floyd County, carved out of Cherokee County in 1832, recognizes Indian fighter and U.S. Congressman General John Floyd. Floyd's county seat, Rome, sits at the juncture of the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers as the two join to form the Coosa and lies on the ancient site of Chiaha, one Hernando de Soto had noted in his travels.
