Incorporated in 1949, Fort Oglethorpe honors James Edward Oglethorpe, Georgia's founder.
Fort Oglethorpe's history is unique and fascinating, a drama of several wars set in the beauty of the North Georgia woods and streams. During the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II, the city served as a major military outpost. Today, it is the northern gateway to the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park, an outdoor laboratory of a critical battle and a place of serene natural beauty.
