Gordon County, created in 1850, took its land from Floyd and Bartow counties. William Washington Gordon lends his name to the area. The first Georgian to graduate from West Point and president of the Central Railroad and Banking Company, Gordon encouraged the state's development. Calhoun, the county seat, is named for Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina.
