Hazlehurst, the county seat of Jeff Davis County, incorporated as a town August 22, 1891. The city honors Colonel George H. Hazlehurst, a civil engineer who surveyed for the Macon & Brunswick Railroad.
The Hazlehurst Jeff Davis Museum houses the Hazlehurst Historic Society collections and genealogy library. Also of interest are a 1890 farmstead, the Circle SS Livestock Market, the Frogbottom Grist Mill and the 1907 county courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
