Jenkinsburg derives its name from the Jenkins family, residents of the area in the 1880s. The legislature approved the town's charter in 1889, and soon after a Southern RR train ran through Jenkinsburg. As the 1800s drew to a close, Jenkinsburg residents had built a few stores, a lumber yard, two cotton gins and a school.
