Macon, incorporated in 1823, is the county seat of Bibb County. The city honors Senator Nathaniel Macon.

For history buffs, Macon maintains more listings on the National Register of Historic Places than any other city in Georgia. The city auditorium has the largest covered copper dome in the world, and the Hay House, built in the 1850s, is now a historic museum.
