Monticello, located in Jasper County, incorporated in 1808 as the county seat. Because a number of native Virginians made the city their home, historians speculate that Monticello takes its name from Thomas Jefferson's home in Charlottesville, VA.

Monticello is home to the Forsyth Street Historic District, a neighborhood of dogwood-lined streets, Antebellum cottages and Victorian homes.

Numerous annual festivals take place in Monticello every year, including the Shady Dale Rodeo, held in June, and the Deer Festival, held in November.
