Lured to the area by its rich marble, Scottish and Italian stone workers founded Nelson and later sought its incorporation. Initially, the city limits extended a half mile radius around the marble mill of the Blue Ridge Marble Company.
To honor this heritage, the city today hosts the marble museum, which displays a year-round exhibition of fine marble and tells the story of Pickens County's rich marble mining history.
