Peach County, the youngest of all Georgia counties, built out of Houston and Macon counties in 1924. It takes its name from the region's most famous crop and the state's most beloved symbol. Originally called Fox Valley, the county seat got its new name when a legislative clerk mistakenly jotted down "Fort Valley." Residents decided it would be less trouble to say "Fort" than to change the legislative act.
