Pearson, the county seat of Atkinson County, incorporated on December 27, 1890. The city honors Benjah Pearson who served in the Indian War of 1838.
During the 1960s and 1970s, residents referred to Pearson as the "Chess Capital" of the state. The city has hosted four consecutive chess championships, and city residents make up one-fourth of the Georgia Chess Association membership.
