In the late 1800s, Seaboard Railroad expanded into Bryan County, and in the process brought the business to build Pembroke, the county's seat. Named for a prominent county citizen, Pembroke W. Williams, the city later incorporated on August 23, 1905.
The town's first resident, a railroad construction foreman, lived in a caboose on the railroad siding. That caboose sits today in the city park downtown.
