European colonists founded Port Wentworth in 1733. The city remembers either English aristocrat and iconoclast Henrietta Maria Wentworth or G.W. Wentworth, president of Great Eastern Lumber Company. In settling Port Wentworth, the Europeans established large rice and cotton plantations. Fittingly, years later, Eli Whitney introduced his cotton gin first in this city.
