Incorporated in 1917, Porterdale remembers Oliver S. Porter, the owner of Porterdale Mills, the town's most recognized industry.

Today, the Porterdale Mille Lofts are an adaptive use of the Textile Mill and Cotton Warehouse facilities and include 154 loft-style apartment units, two spaces for restaurants and several retail spaces. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, these buildings have been meticulously restored in compliance with federal historic renovation standards.
