Rockdale County, its land taken from Henry and Newton counties, grew out of changes during Reconstruction. Designated in 1870, the county takes its name from the great beds of granite that run beneath its soil. Conyers, the county seat, remembers W.D. Conyers, a banker and railroad director who donated land so that workers could lay the area's first rail track and construct a depot.
