Incorporated as a town on November 27, 1812, Sandersville is the county seat of Washington County. The city's original name "Saundersville" remembers Mr. M. Saunders, a local storeowner.
Sandersville is nicknamed "The Kaolin City" or "Kaolin Capital of the World." Kaolin is fine white clay used in hundreds of products, ranging from household products, like paper and cosmetics, to the nose cone of rockets.
