Founded in 1799 and incorporated as a town on December 31, 1838, Springfield, the county seat of Effingham County, is named for a mineral spring in the area.

The Effingham County courthouse in Springfield, built in 1908, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. So too are the four blocks surrounding the courthouse.
