Stewart County, created in 1830 from Randolph County lands, remembers President Theodore Roosevelt's grandfather, General Daniel Stewart. He served as an officer in both the Revolution and the War of 1812. Lumpkin, the county seat, is named for Governor Wilson Lumpkin.
