Thomas County, carved out of Decatur and Irwin counties in 1825, takes its name and that of its county seat, Thomasville, from War of 1812 General Jett Thomas. Known today for its annual Rose Festival and unsurpassed hunting opportunities, this area served as a popular winter retreat for wealthy northern families from about 1875 onward.
