Thomson, the county seat of McDuffie County, incorporated as a village on February 15, 1854. The city honors Edgar Thomson of the Georgia Railroad.

Built by Thomas Ansley in 1785, the Old Rock House in Thomson may be Georgia's oldest documented house with its design intact. The Belle Meade Hunt, one of the most well-known fox-hunting clubs in America, also calls the city home.
