Twiggs County, created in 1809 from land formerly in Wilkinson County, honors General John Twiggs, a Revolutionary War figure, and Jeffersonville, the county seat, pays tribute to a family of early settlers. While local farmers initially lamented the county's unusual sand/clay mix of soil, residents later stumbled on its application, and during the early 1900s, the soil gave birth to a thriving kaolin industry.
