Incorporated in 1906, Ty Ty draws its name from a species of trees that once lined Ty Ty Creek, which runs through the area. 

The city is the birthplace of American softball player Darby Cottle Veazey, the only female athlete to have her number retired at Florida State University. It is also the birthplace of Gospel and bass player James "Big Chief" Wetherington.
