Warrenton, the county seat of Warren County, incorporated as a town on December 8, 1810. The city and the county remember General Joseph Warren, a Revolutionary War hero who was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Of interest for Warrenton visitors with interests in history are the Warren County courthouse, the Confederate Monument and the Burkhalter Home, a colonial period design.
U.S. 278, between Warrenton and Thompson, follows the path of the famous Upper Trading Path, an Indian Trail that led from Augusta to Indian settlements as far west as the Mississippi River.
