Waycross incorporated as the seat of Ware County on March 3, 1874. Waycross, originally known as Tebeauville, gets its name from the city's location at a key railroad junction. Lines from six directions meet at the city; it's a place where "ways cross."
Waycross marks the beginning of the Okefenokee Swamp, a preserve for many of the state's native animals and plants.
Okefenokee Technical College and Waycross College are both two-year schools located in the city.
