Waynesboro, incorporated on December 10, 1803, is the seat of Burke County. The city honors General Anthony "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a famous Revolutionary War soldier.

Historic Waynesboro maintains buildings, including the county courthouse, churches and homes, from the turn of the 20th century, and the Burke County Museum traces the rural area's history from the rise and fall of plantation life to the establishment of agribusiness.
