West Point, a town in Troup County with a small portion to the south in Harris County, sits near the western-most point of the Chattahoochee River. It is home to a large reservoir, Lake West Point, which the Army Corps of Engineers built during the construction of the West Point Dam (used for water storage and hydroelectric power). This lake is responsible for releasing water during dry seasons to help maintain the water level of the navigable inland waterway from Columbus all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico.
Because the Atlanta & LaGrange Railroad ran through the town, railroad management renamed the line the Atlanta and West Point Railroad. The town of East Point, just outside Atlanta, connected to West Point thanks to this railroad.
Modern industry in West Point includes the Kia Motors factory that opened in 2010. The plant opened at a time when West Point residents feared the city would become a ghost town, its other industries having fled the area.
