Originally called "Jug Tavern," Winder, the seat of Barrow County, remembers the notable railroad builder and manager, John H. Winder. The city incorporated in 1893.
The Barrow County Museum is located in the old Barrow County Jail. This Gothic Revival historic site features a hanging tower and jail cells. Located in the center of the town, the museum also offers a special collection on Senator Richard B. Russell and other photos and displays related to the county's history.
Fort Yargo State Park lies one mile south of Winder. Park visitors can enjoy swimming, hiking, fishing, boating, golfing and picnicking. The park is also notable for its Will-A-Way Recreation Center, which is designed especially for the physically disabled.
