Worth County, organized in 1853 from land formerly in Dooly and Irwin counties, is named for Major General William J. Worth, a commander in the Mexican War. The county's naming is perhaps not the only apt tribute to the commander; the oldest military road in the state, the Thigpen Trail, runs through Worth County and stretches from South Carolina to the Gulf of Mexico. Sylvester, the veritable "Peanut Capital of the World," houses the county seat.
