October is Cyber Security Awareness Month

Lock your computer to keep your data safe.

Governor Nathan Deal has proclaimed October as Cyber Security Awareness Month. It’s part of a nationwide effort to share information about protecting business and personal data.

To promote cyber security in homes, schools and offices, the Georgia Technology Authority's Office of Information Security has assembled the following list of online resources. Some are intended for all computer and Internet users while others are more technical and better suited for information technology professionals.

Resources for ALL Computer and Internet Users

OnGuard Online
The site offers special resources for educators, parents and kids. Topics include phishing, kids and socializing online, shopping online, understanding mobile apps, tips for using public wi-fi networks and malware. It’s jointly sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Federal Trade Commission Identity Theft Site 
The site provides detailed information to help you deter, detect and defend against identity theft. Internet Fraud Site
The site includes a list of government web resources to help you report and learn about Internet fraud.

Be Crime Smart
This Federal Bureau of Investigation resource covers numerous crime-related topics in addition to Internet safety.

Stop, Think, Connect
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security — through the “Stop, Think, Connect” campaign — offers tips to keep you safe online.

U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT)
This U.S. government website offers tips and advice about common security issues for non-technical computer users. You’ll find numerous links under such topics as general security, cyber attacks and threats, email and communications, mobile devices, privacy, safe browsing and software and applications.

Download Security Posters
The U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team lets you easily download cyber security posters in PDF format for use in the office. You can also download a brochure with content compiled from the posters.

Resources for IT Professionals — Information Security Online Training

Defense Information Systems Agency Online Training
The site provides online access to training from the U.S. Department of Defense.

Free IT Security Training
The site lists free training from several private industry sources.

Software Engineering Institute’s Virtual Training Environment
The site provides access to on-demand lectures through video, audio presentations and demonstrations; hands-on lab environments; and a tool to manage enrollments and track progress.
