Prep to Renew Your Driver's License

August 23, 2013
A young woman holds up her driver's license.

Last summer, to comply with federal law, the Department of Driver Services introduced Secure ID driver’s licenses. Since then, when residents need to renew licenses or apply for the first time, they must visit customer service centers in person and present documents proving identity, Social Security number and residential address.

Before you arrive, keep these helpful tips in mind:

  • Make sure to create your custom checklist.
  • Arrive on Thursdays, which are less busy. Avoid coming on Tuesdays, which tend to be very busy.
  • If you get to your center and realize you're missing proof of residency or Social Security number, avoid making a return trip by uploading the missing residency or Social Security items or sending them by fax or mail.  Learn how to Skip a Trip.

You can take advantage of many other DDS services online as well. You can change your address, replace a lost license and track the processing of a new license or ID.
