Holiday Volunteer Opportunities

With Thanksgiving behind us, Christmas is quickly approaching and bringing all the holiday stress with it. It can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of gifts, cooking and family gatherings that it’s easy to overlook those who need help the most.

In this season of giving, there are many different opportunities around the metro Atlanta area for you to serve the community.

Hands On Atlanta

Hands On Atlanta offers a variety of volunteer events around Atlanta, ranging from outdoor cleanups to serving meals to the homeless. At their site, you can search for the right opportunity to serve based on your location and preferred type of event. They also have a volunteer calendar so you can see what events are coming up next.

The Atlanta Children's Shelter

The Atlanta Children’s Shelter works to help families get back on their feet, and you can help them in this effort. The shelter has volunteer opportunities year-round, but they are also hosting the Holiday House 2014 this year during the week of December 15 - December 19 at the North Avenue Presbyterian Church on Peachtree Street Northeast in Atlanta.

The Holiday House provides an opportunity for the ACS parents to do all the holiday shopping for their children free of charge, and you can help out at the event all throughout the week.

The Atlanta Mission

The Atlanta Mission provides housing and food to those who need assistance in Atlanta and Jefferson, Georgia. They have volunteer opportunities all year long, but they could use some donations for the homeless individuals who use their shelters as they gear up for the holiday season. Some of the items they need include:

  • Marta gift cards
  • Toilet tissue
  • Men’s jeans and work pants
  • All sizes of flip flops (for showering)
  • Men’s and women’s athletic and work shoes (not heels or dress shoes)

You can also check charities in your local area to see if there are volunteer opportunities available during the holidays.

Volunteering during the holidays can bring joy to your family as well as the families you are helping. Consider making these types of service opportunities part of your holiday traditions, and let the season of giving make your life a little brighter.
