City Spotlight: Helen

April 14, 2016

Driving down Highway 75 in northeast Georgia, you feel like you’ve entered a new world. So many colors, lights and triangular shaped buildings lining the side of the road. Even the fast food restaurants we’re used to seeing have red brick roofs and white stoned walls surrounded by cobblestone walkways. If you don’t know where you are, this could be quite a shocking experience!

Helen, Georgia transports you to a Bavarian Alpine village set at the base of Unicoi State Park. Combining the beautiful backdrop plus each building’s cute architecture, Helen gives off a magical atmosphere. Handmade gifts, German styled restaurants and friendly walking paths provide just a few of the fun activities you can do. In the summer, people flock to Helen and the Chattahoochee River to go fly-fishing or tubing through the gentle streams.

It’s definitely one of Georgia’s treasured diamonds. Or more accurately … treasured gold! European settlers moved to northeast Georgia in search for gold and timber. Falling in love with the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain scenery, they settled there and helped create this Bavarian Village feel now becoming Georgia’s third most visited city.
