Jasper County, established in 1807, developed out of Baldwin County. Although originally residents meant to honor John Randolph of Virginia with the county's naming, members of the Georgia General Assembly disagreed with Randolph's stand on national issues in 1812 and so voted to name the county for a Revolutionary War hero, Sergeant William Jasper, a soldier who had died while trying to retrieve a flag during the siege of Savannah. By 1828 Randolph was back in Georgia's good graces, and the state legislature decided to name another new county for him. Monticello, Jasper's county seat, pays tribute to Thomas Jefferson, using the name of his home.
