Madison, the county seat of Morgan County, incorporated on March 12, 1866. The city honors former U.S. President James Madison.
The Morgan County courthouse in Madison, built in 1905, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Madison also boasts the largest designated historic district in the state.
Another note of historical interest: During the Civil War, Sherman's Army spared Madison destruction because pro-Union Senator Joshua Hill called the town home.
