Randolph County, created in 1828 from Lee County, is named for John Randolph of Virginia. Its original land included territory the state legislature later allotted for Quitman, Stewart and Webster counties as well as parts of Clay and Terrell counties. Cuthbert, the county seat, pays tribute to John A. Cuthbert, an editor, congressman and jurist.
