Founded in 1829 and moved farther south years later to follow the railroad, Stockbridge remembers Levi Stockbridge, a "Yankee professor," who traveled along the East Coast teaching classes in various communities.

Clark Community Park, Gardner Park, and Simmons Park are located within the city and offer playgrounds, walking trails, pavilions, tennis courts, and picnic areas. Another small park beside City Hall features a fountain and a built-to-scale replica of the Statue of Liberty.
